As a former essay scorer, I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to writing tests. There are many paths to a winning essay -- it depends on what you, the student, bring to the writing task. Some students do feel more comfortable approaching a timed writing test with templates (for example, using a predertimed structure for the thesis and transition statements). However, this approach is not for everyone. For many students, even the SAT and CLEP essays are a matter of taking stock of their own experiences and trusting their own unique voice. You can find more information on my essay test philosophy in this article and view a sample lesson here. I am also working on putting together a list of resources and links for state writing assessments.
Writing has been my passion since I was five; as a teacher, I particularly enjoy working with young writers, and helping them see themselves as the authors they are and can be. You may choose to receive writing tutoring in-person (in the Seattle area) or online. ESL students and native English speakers are both welcome. The first online tutoring session -- arranged through Tote Bag Teaching --is free. There is no obligation -- when you want to schedule a second session in the virtual classroom, just contact me, either directly, at karen@totebagteaching.org, or through eduFire. Payment is on a per-service basis, secured with Paypal.
